SHELBY’S ELBOWS EVERYONE?

That’s right for the fifth year running we have the most famous local duo SHELBY’S ELBOWS taking to the Main Stage in the afternoon on Saturday 14th July, entertaining all the family and getting everyone up and dancing to celebrate their 10th year.

Shelby’s Elbows are an acoustic duo, made up of Dorset musicians Martin P. Davies and Phil Jeffs. Formed after meeting in various Open Mic nights in 2008, Shelby’s Elbows have developed into a locally well known entertainment duo, playing a variety of instruments and producing an instantly recognisable sound that surprises people when they discover that there’s only two people making it. Starting out as a covers band, they are now writing and recording their own original music from a wide variety of influences gained from their covers set – from Nirvana to Neil Young, Seal to Skynyrd, Dire Straits to Turin Brakes and anything in between.
Shelby’s Elbows are an exciting, dynamic duo, delivering a deep filled sound that punches well above the level which their numeric deficiency should allow. Inspirational lyrics and catchy conundrums for those who like to rock their fun but socially-aware world with guitars, exuberance and honesty, along with the misuse of inappropriate and inaccurate presidential quotes.
Who can not forget the legendary Shelby’s Elbows packing The BigTop in 2016!
It all started in early 2008 when Phil was offered a gig, having played a few Open Mic nights at the bar in which he worked (Number 10 Cafe Bar in Bridport, Dorset). Not having enough material for a whole set, he approached his friend Martin Davies and asked for his help. He instantly refused. Point blank. He hadn’t played in public for the best part of a decade and was definitely not going to start again now.
Definitely not………………So several pints of Guinness and an unknown quantity of rum later, Martin agreed, and before he could do anything about it, the posters were up, so there was no going back. So on Tuesday April 29th 2008, Phil and Martin, along with their good friend Simon Wichett played their first ever gig as ‘Phil and Friends’. Playing to a crowd of very understanding friends and family, the gig went well, and a few more followed during the summer of 2008. In October, Simon decided to leave to focus on his solo projects, and the trio slimmed down to a duo. Shelby’s Elbows were born.
Since then, the band has gone from strength to strength, regularly drawing crowds in their native Bridport, as well as venturing a little further from home. After a free covers album was produced in 2009, they released their first original music – The Yesterday’s Voice EP – in 2012, and continue to play and entertain throughout the Westcountry.

MIRANDA SYKES

Miranda Sykes, the acclaimed singer and bassist with ‘Show of Hands’ is returning to her roots. After a career spanning over 20 years, during which time she has played with many of the top musicians and singers within the folk world, she will be touring as she started out: one woman, one bass, and one guitar.

Borrowed Places is a project that draws its inspiration primarily from the songs and landscapes of her native Lincolnshire, seen through the eyes of someone who has lived away for many years. With her sensational voice, and accompanying herself, Sykes interprets the soul of the land and takes her audience on a journey that resonates with us all. Miranda says”,The themes of Borrowed Places are not specific; the land changes, it grows, it shrinks, it adapts and it resists, but most of all it lives and breathes. I’m really proud of the album and I cant wait to showcase it on my upcoming solo tour.”

“Emotionally engaging, these clearly enunciated and beautifully expressed songs with their deftly executed musical accompaniment constitute a truly enchanting package.” The Living Tradition

EGDELARKS

BBC Award-Winning Duo ‘Edgelarks’ Announces Spring Tour and Album
The Guardian have called them “bravely original”, and Mark Radcliffe of BBC Radio 2 states they are “quite brilliant”. Edgelarks may be a new name on the scene, but its creators Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin are already firmly established as a leading – and BBC award-winning – force of roots and acoustic music.

Their new project ‘Edgelarks’ blends British traditional music with Indian classical slide guitar, stomping beatbox and harmonica to blistering effect. The eponymous new album has the pair’s strong stem of original writing running throughout, and runs wilder with every play.

Hannah says, “Edgelarks is also the name of our new album, which takes the idea that thresholds, despite often being places of marginalisation, are also places of change – and therefore places of hope. That in the end, we have far more in common than things that divide us, because we are all liminal – we are all just passing through. We can’t wait to get on the road and share the new material.”

KIRSTY MERRYN

Kirsty Merryn is one of the most arresting and unconventional new young singer songwriters on the UK folk roots scene, with a style uniquely her own. London-based, New Forest-born Kirsty launched her debut album She & I at London’s Union Chapel on November 9 whilst supporting Show of Hands on their extensive UK Cathedrals tour. Kirsty has been championed by Show of Hands’ frontman Steve Knightley after he met her while teaching at an EFDSS songwriting retreat for upcoming folk singer songwriters and she went on to open for Show of Hands at their headline appearance at Sidmouth Folk Week in 2016, and supported them over the 22 nights of their Cathedral’s tour of the UK, at the end of 2017, performing to around 14,000 people along the way.

Beguiling and mercurial, Kirsty’s music is heavily anchored in the folk tradition with jazz and classical backwaters. But it has a much wider reach, with her influences ranging from Cara Dillon to Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush – emphatic pianobased songs with sharply observed lyrics, packaged with panache in elegant, beautifully balanced settings and delivered in crystal clear, assured vocals. Skilfully produced by in-demand, award-winning Gerry Diver (who also plays myriad instruments), She & I comprises eight Merryn originals, focusing on the diverse stories of inspirational women in history, from Emma Hamilton to Annie Edson Taylor – the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and survive! It is already receiving extensive air play Including the Mike Harding Folk Show, national airplay on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show, the BBC 3 World Music show, as well as many regional BBC channels, and is receiving fantastic reviews. It reached number 3 in the Amazon Folk charts and continues to receive great reviews from newspapers including The Guardian, The Sunday Express and many more.
